Background

PBS NewsHour, formerly called The Robert MacNeil Report, The MacNeil/Lehrer Report, The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, and The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, is an weekday evening news program broadcast on PBS since 1975.

1st Intro (November 7th, 1975-October 3rd, 1976)

Visuals: Superimposed over the newsdesk of the episode, a crudely-drawn face (Robert MacNeil) draws in, along with the text "the Robert MacNeil report" in MacNeil's handwriting.

Closing Variants: Before the credits appear, the end result of the opening version fades in.

Technique: Hand-drawn animation, with chyron effects for superimposing.

Audio: A brass piece, ending with three drum hits. This was composed by Bernard Hoffer.

2nd Intro (October 6th, 1975-1983)

Visuals: On a black background, the blue text "macneil" and "lehrer" in a cursive font fly in from opposite directions and out the other side. This is followed by more copies of the text in different colors. THe final copy of the text in white flies in and the words cross over each other, as a blue line draws in from the top, separating the two words. The line contracts to the height of the text, as the additional text "the" and "report" fly in from the top and bottom respectively, and place themselves above and below the line.

Variants:

  • For the first week of this logo's use, the line was thinner and red.
  • Early 1976-1977 episodes would have the news set fade in halfway through the intro's animation.
  • On some episodes, the entire animation is superimposed over footage of the topic discussed on the show.

Closing Variant: Superimposed over the news set, the finished logo fades in. As the music finishes, the blue line engulfs the screen, and transitions into the 1971 PBS logo.

Technique: Scanimation by Dolphin Productions.

Audio: The Bernard Hoffer theme from the previous logo.

Audio Variant: The closing would have the theme slightly rearranged.

3rd Intro (November 5, 1983-1991)

Visuals: On a black background, the white text "The MacNeil/Lehrer" in Didot zoom in, as some orange and red segmented lines fade in from the top and bottom. The lines converge and reveal the black text "NEWS" and "HOUR", with "NEWS" above the latter. As the orange segments take over the screen, a white-outlined "NEWS" text flies in from the top-right, as well as the text "HOUR" flying from the bottom-right. The words fly to their corresponding words as the orange lines fade out, leaving just the text.

Variants: Starting with the March 4th, 1985 episode, the logo has a few differences:

  • The black background is replaced by a segmented blue/black gradient background.
  • The red segment is deleted and the orange segments are now grey.
  • The NEWS and HOUR text are blue.

Technique: Computer animation.

Audio: A piece composed by Bernard Hoffer.
