Background

Breakthrough Entertainment is a Canadian production company founded in 1986 by Peter Williamson and Ira Levy. It produces famous Canadian TV shows such as Jimmy Two-Shoes and Atomic Betty. On July 10, 2018, 9 Story Media Group acquired the company's kids and family library and development state. In early 2022, Breakthrough Entertainment claimed bankruptcy leaving a total of over $2,200,000 Canadian dollars unpaid to producers and production companies for which they were acting as International Distributors, while Shareholder and Executive Producer Levy bought development assets and transferred rights to his own personal entity.

1st Logo (October 2, 1993-June 7, 1999)

Logo: During the end credits of Dudley the Dragon (which is a compilation of stock images and videos), we cut to a field of grass and trees near a lake, with the water rippling a little. Along, with a credit for Breakthrough scrolling up and stopping dead center.

Early Version: In Season 1-2 of Dudley, the Breakthrough credit text is seen over a photo of a forest with a tree trunk in the center.

Later Version: On the 1997 Mr. Men series, the logo is now standalone being reduced to:

Produced in association with (in white)
BREAKTHROUGH
FILMS & TELEVISION INC. (in yellow)

Variants:

  • For the French-Canadian of Dudley the Dragon, known as Les Aventures d'Arthur le Dragon, there are both versions. The in-credit notice is in French and the one is in English.
  • On Dudley's 4th and 5th season, instead of scrolling with the credits, the text appear in a square iris effect (the final season had Dudley's E-mail address sandwiched between the Breakthrough text and the copyright notice).

FX/SFX: It's live-action.

Music/Sounds: The end theme of the show.

Availability: Rare. Originally seen on Dudley the Dragon (which was re-runed in 2008 on APTN). It was later seen on the North American version of Mr. Men and Little Miss, which is no longer airing on TV and does not have a home video release making it lost media.

Legacy: This is obviously rare in the sense that research only found this logo on two shows. The previous edit of this page claims that this logo ceased in September 1997, when Mr. Men was syndicated and debuted in America at that time with this logo at the end. Due to the rarity of the Mr. Men '97 series, it's unsure that this was continued until it's end in 1999, or used the next logo.

2nd Logo (1997-March 23, 2004)

Nicknames: "The Searchlights", "Breakthrough Searchlights"

Logo: Against a gradient background with the top half dark blue and the bottom half light blue, we see some crudely drawn trees in the bottom left corner and four searchlights at each side of the screen. Above, we see the stylized dark blue text with white outline that reads "BREAKTHROUGH" in a '30s Art Deco font. The URL "www.breakthrough.com" is seen in the bottom right corner in smaller lettering.

FX/SFX: The searchlights moving.

Music/Sounds: The end theme of the show.

Availability: Uncommon; seen on Swap TV and the first season of Kenny vs. Spenny.

3rd Logo (August 29, 2004-2022?)

Nickname: "The Green Square"

Logo: On a white background, a green outline of a square with rounded edges and the bottom left corner unfinished is drawn in, which is big enough to fill the screen. When finished, a smaller version of the square with the text "Breakthrough" below the square and the small green text "FILMS & TELEVISION" zooming in slowly below "Breakthrough" fades in. The big square fades out as this happens. Then, the logo fades out.

Variants:

  • For the logo's later use, "FILMS & TELEVISION" is replaced with "ENTERTAINMENT".
  • On Pirate Express, a still, in-credit version is used.
  • On Kenny vs. Spenny (2nd to 4th seasons), the logo is white and still on a black background. The company's website is written below.
  • On The Big Fun Crafty Show, the logo had a black background on it.

FX/SFX: The big square drawing itself and fading out, the logo appearing, and "FILMS & TELEVISION" zooming in. Simple but effective animation.

Music/Sounds: The end theme of the show, or none.

Availability: No longer current. Seen on Atomic Betty, Kenny vs. Spenny (2nd to 6th seasons), Captain Flamingo, Jimmy Two-Shoes, The Adventures Of Napkin Man!, Rocket Monkeys, among other shows produced by Breakthrough from 2004 to 2022. Also appears on the company's films.
