Background

BRTN TV2 is a Belgian television channel, which forms part of the Flemish public broadcasting organisation Vlaamse Radio-en Televisieomroep (VRT). Originally formed in 1977 as BRT TV2, it split in 1997 to form Canvas and Ketnet, with Ketnet being for children and Canvas being basically VRT2.

BRT TV1

1st ID (April 26, 1977-1982)

Visuals: On a black background, a red square is seen with the BRT/RTBF eye logo, along with 2 vertical triangles making in a "II". "EINDE" is seen on the bottom right of the square.

Technique: A still image.

Audio: An oboe piece.

Availability: This was seen on closedowns.

2nd ID (1982-1987)

Visuals: Just an abstract 2, made in a pink outline, on a black background.

Variants: The logo is known to have several variants of color and the general look.

Technique: A still image.

Audio: Just the announcer.

Availability: The logo was mostly seen during intervals, but was mostly ditched later on for the next logo (which still made appearances before it officially appeared). The actual logo does make a few appearances later in, like on the clock.

3rd ID (1982-1989)

Visuals: On a black background, parts of the new logo, which is the same 2 as before, but made of tubes (in turquoise/blue, pink, yellow, and orange respectively), pop in one by one twice, followed by the logo fully forming twice. This happens for 3 times, but on the 3rd try, the logo is fully formed a 3rd time, with the line drawing in below. All the parts have a blue trail behind them.

Variants:

  • Starting around 1985, the trail effect was enhanced.
  • A variant had the logo wiping away, first the rings, then the line.

Technique: Feedback effects.

Audio: A warbly synth tune that repeats in different pitches, before ending with a chime. An announcer would then play. The variant had an abridged version.

4th ID (1987-January 26, 1991)

Visuals: Zooming away from a blue valley on a black background, it rotates up to reveal itself as a blue grid and takes up the entire screen. As it zooms out, 3 rings, each getting bigger and in yellow, red, and blue respectively, zoom out and spin around to form part of the logo from before, but in 3D. As the parts settle, the background darkens, the pieces gain a drop shadow, and a green line slides in to finish the logo.

Variants:

  • Normally, the logo is still.
  • At the end of the broadcast day, the logo would be smaller and had "EINDE" below it in large letters.

Technique: CGI animation.

Audio: A proud string and horn theme, with a melody playing at the end. Just like before an announcer would play.

TVTWEE

ID (January 27, 1991-1994)

Visuals: On a white background, there is a rectangle featuring footage of a blue-tinted sky zooming out, while another rectangle, with tan on the underside of its purple-tinted river footage front and a cut-out of the text "TV" in a very modern-looking font, rolls onto it and the revealed bit slowly turns dark blue. After a bit, one half peels away to reveal a dark blue rectangle with the text "/EE" in the same font and footage as the covered half, which also peels away. It reveals itself to be "TWEE", with a diagonal cut between "TV" and "/EE". The river footage then fades into the dark blue sections. The sections then fade through different footage.

Variants:

  • At startups and closedowns, the logo is extended with additional footage and animations (including something like the BRT logo), before the logo is revealed, through with no additional footage.
  • Like before, at the end of the day, the logo would be smaller and had "EINDE" below it in large letters.

Technique: CGI animation and live-action.

Audio: A gentle piano theme, with it being rearranged and extended for the startup and closedown variants. Just like before an announcer would play.

BRTN TV2

ID (1994-November 30, 1997)

Visuals: On a black background, a dark, shiny object is seen as a searchlight appears and the background turns into a moving, turquoise/aqua green cloudy background. As it lightens up, its revealed that the object is a "2" with an arc surrounding most of it. The searchlight then reveals its colors (teal for the 2, purple for the arc) and causes it to brighten. Another searchlight fully brightens it and "B R T N" in a Futura font fades in below. As this is all happening, several arcs with footage wipe in and out of the screen as the background stops.

Variants:

  • Usually, the logo doesn't have "BRTN" below, but rather forming by sparkles and having several rings around it.
  • At closedown, the animation is basically in reverse. Here, the background moves left a bit as several arcs appear with footage in them. Then, 2 searchlights wipe over the logo, causing it to darken before fading out (the text also fades out below).

Technique: CGI animation done by Roderick Hulsbergen.

Audio: A mellow synth and piano tune, with swooshes for the searchlights and arcs. This is changed somewhat in the other variants.
