Background

Apatow Productions (or The Apatow Company) is an American film/television production company founded by Judd Apatow in 1999.

1st Logo (September 25, 1999-March 12, 2002)

Logo: On a gray background, the letters "APat w" in an ink splatter-like font are seen being uncovered and covered along with their shadows. An orange-red ink splat appears and the middle dries up to make an "o", forming the word "APatow". Underneath the word, "PRODUCTIONS" fades in as a small font.

Variant: Sometimes the words "In Association with" fade in on top of the logo.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Music/Sounds: Either a western-styled theme or the ending theme.

Availability: Rare. Seen on the NBC series Freaks and Geeks and the Fox series Undeclared.

2nd Logo (August 4, 2006-August 6, 2008)

Logo: On a black background, we see the words "APATOW PRODUCTIONS" in a Roadkill-type font. There is a yellow line that separates those two words.

Variant: Sometimes, the logo is entirely white on a black background.

Technique: None.

Music/Sounds: The closing theme of the movie.

Availability: Seen at the end of Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Superbad, Step Brothers, and Pineapple Express.

3rd Logo (June 4, 2010-)

Logo: On a black background, there is a child-like drawing of a man laying with his arms spread out wide. Next to him are two drawn hearts, one curvier than the other. Above those hearts are the handwritten words "APAtow Prod". The drawing is done in white. Sometimes the logo is inverted.

Trivia: Below the drawing of the stick-figured man is the signature "Iris", the name of one of Judd Apatow's daughters. Judging by this insignia, it's possible that she is the one responsible for creating this logo.

Technique: None.

Music/Sounds: The closing theme of the movie, or none.

Availability: Current. Seen at the end of Get Him to the Greek, Bridesmaids, the HBO series Girls, The Five-Year Engagement, and This is 40, among others. However, print movie posters and DVD covers use the 2nd logo.

4th Logo (December 18, 2013-)

Logo: On a white background, a praying mantis is seen nibbling on its arms. Suddenly, it turns to face us and the text "APATOW PRODUCTIONS" fades in with a blur effect.

Technique: Mostly live-action, with superimposed text. This was done by Picturemill.

Music/Sounds: A open-string guitar (on standard EADGBE tuning) being played, with the strings played individually first, then all strings simultaneously. Otherwise, it's the opening theme of the movie.

Availability: Seen on Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, and, most recently, The Big Sick.
