Android

Background

Android is a mobile operating system designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. The core of the operating system, known as the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), is based on a modified version of the Linux kernel with multiple open-source software dependencies. It is primarily licensed through the Apache License. It is developed by a consortium of developers known as the Open Handset Alliance; however, the most widely used version is developed by Google, which includes proprietary closed-source software developed by Google themselves, in cooperation with the manufacturer of the device, such as Samsung's One UI. The Android name and logo are currently trademarks of Google. Many of the leading mobile phone brands today run on Google's Android software, including the Samsung Galaxy series. Several manufacturers have made forks of AOSP to compete with Google's ecosystem, such as Amazon's Fire OS and custom ROMs like LineageOS. The AOSP source code has also been used to adapt the software to a wider range of electronic devices, including game consoles, cameras, portable media players, smart TVs and PCs.

1st Screen (September 23, 2008-February 9, 2009)

Visuals: On a black background, the white "android" on a sci-fi style font is shown next to the Android logo, a green robot with two antennas and eyes. A white glow appears and disappears behind the logo during the loop.

Audio: None.

Availability: Seen on the earliest Android versions, those being 1.0 and 1.1 (aka Petit Four).

2nd Screen (April 27, 2009-June 25, 2014 (end of production), October 2017 (extended support))

Visuals: On a black background, the "android" text from the previous screen is shown in silver. A shine then passes through the text during the loop.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: None.

Availability: Seen on stock Android versions debuting with 1.5 (Cupcake), until 4.4.4 (KitKat).

3rd Screen (November 4, 2014-)

Visuals: On a black background, the "android" text is shown in a more generic, curved-style font. Shades of dark gray and white are seen wiping through the text during the loop.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: None.

Availability: Seen on stock Android versions debuting with 5.0 (Lollipop). It is still used in recent versions.
