Background

Maverick Entertainment Group is a film distribution company formed by Doug Schwab in 1997 and based in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Maverick focuses on low budget niche content, namely urban and LGBT movies.

1st Logo (1997-)

Logo: Fading in to a blue night sky with mountainous terrain surrounding it, a black horse runs along the ground with flames at its feet, and a spotlight following its movements as well. The camera pans to the full side-view of the horse, revealing it to be in actually in a darkly-tinted gold, and remains on it for a few seconds on it as it flickers a bit. The camera then starts to zoom out and sink a bit, leaving enough room for the text "MAVERICK" in a sketchy-looking font to fade in and blast out flames, illuminating the horse as they do. The background fades to a dark blue gradient color, the horse fades to a still all-yellow version of itself, and the flames stop on the text, leaving it with a brief glow before it dies down.

Variants:

  • A later version would have a similar beginning, but with a brighter horse and more flames around the feet, but then the horse with fade to a metallic silver and the background to black. The horse zooms back as the "MAVERICK" text fades in and the logo forms in a similar way, but now with a lens flare drawing around the horse (which changes into a more dynamic-looking drawing) to form a purple oval emblem shape, and the text turning white along with "ENTERTAINMENT GROUP" fading in below. The oval shines as well.
  • Widescreen and fullscreen versions of the logo exist.
  • A still version exists with the print logo in blue and white on a black background.

Technique: The horse running, done in cheap CGI animation, though this is expected from a low-budget company.

Music/Sounds: A pounding tribal tune, ending with a clear synth note and three muffled notes.

Availability: Can be seen on a number of low budget independent films. A majority of Maverick's titles were co-distributed by York Entertainment in the late-90s/early 2000s. Maverick maintains a YouTube channel and website, often releasing their films on the former for free.

2nd Logo (2014-)

Logo: Against a purple sky with a small moon, an ethereal horse runs by as smoke comes out of it. It cuts closer to the horse as the smoke trail dissipates and forms the logotype from before, albeit without "Group".

Technique: Basically a modest recreation of the previous logo.

Music/Sounds: A somber guitar tune ending with a quiet synth note.

Availability: Appeared on All for the Money, and will be seen on new films by Maverick. As mentioned before, they have released most of their movies on YouTube for free, so it is very easy to find this.

Legacy: Beyond any visual gaffs with the horse model, for a low budget company, this is a stark improvement from the previous logo.
