KOFY-TV

Background

KOFY was founded in 1968 as KEMO-TV. In 1980, the station was acquired by James Gabbert's Pacific FM Inc. and changed the call letters to KTZO. The station was operated at 5,000,000 watts identifying itself as "The most powerful television station in Northern California." In 1985, The transmitter changed to true stereo. The next year, James Gabbert acquired KOFY 1050 AM and changed the call letters to KOFY-TV. The station became a WB affiliate in 1995, and in 1998, changed the letters to KBWB. The station became independent again as "Your TV 20, Cable 13". It became KOFY again in 2008.

1st ID (1980-1989)

Visuals: There is a pet (usually a dog or a cat) standing next to the TV20 logo on the TV. All of a sudden, the pet looks at the logo. and it zooms into full screen. Finally, the byline appears.

Trivia: According to "Behind the KOFY", James Gabbert has a dog named "Whiskey", Suddenly, he put him in a chair and shot him on camera. One day, people ran postcards to get pets on TV. There is a new pet every Saturday.

Byline:

1980-1982: "KTZO SAN FRANCISCO" in a blocky font.
1982-1986: "KTZO SAN FRANCISCO" in a light slab serif font.
1986-1989: The KOFY logo stands next to the words "San Francisco" in a Helvetica font.

Technique: Live-action, with ADO effects for the logo. This logo was designed by Lester Gok.

Audio: An uptempo big band fusion fanfare with a jazz chorus singing "We've got what you're looking for, TV20!". Composed by Bernie Krause at Parasound. Beginning in 1982, As the jingle flourishes, an announcer (voiced by Steve Jordan) reads the byline. In 1987, The music is slightly reorchestrated to add the "STEREO" whisper at the end.

2nd ID (1989-1996)

Visuals: Same as before, but the logo is the number "20" in a gold reflection. As the pet looks at the logo, it flies into the camera and zooms out. The "KOFY" call letters and words "San Francisco" appear.

Technique: Live-action, with CGI effects for the logo.

Audio: An orchestral rock mix theme with a chorus singing "Welcome to your Place, KOFY TV20!". The "STEREO" whisper and announcer are intact.
