BBC Films

1st Logo (18 July 1990)

Visuals: On a black background, the BBC's coat of arms zooms out and settles itself in the centre. After this happens, the white text "A BBC Films Production" types itself in underneath.

Technique: Simple animation.

Audio: None.

Availability: This can be seen on Antonia & Jane.

2nd Logo (10 November 1990-3 October 1997)

Visuals: It's just a white box with "FILMS" under the 1988 BBC logo of the time, in the closing credits.

Variant: On one unknown pre-1997 BBC movie, this logo shares the screen with the print version of the 1990 Thames International logo.

Technique: A still, printed image.

Audio: The closing theme of the movie or none.

Availability: Seen on pre-1997 BBC movies.

3rd Logo (3 April 1998-9 May 2003)

Visuals: A live-action flame bursts from the left side of the screen. A bright yellow splash appears and creates the 1997 BBC logo with "Films" next to it.

Technique: Live-action.

Audio: Wind chime sounds accompanied by five piano notes.

Availability: Seen on I Went Down and the UK release of Billy Elliot, among other films.

4th Logo (21 May 2003-14 September 2007)

Visuals: A huge explosion occurs, leaving white particles. The 1997 BBC logo with "F I L M S" or "Films" next to it appears.

Variant: A still variant exists, which was seen at the end of their films.

Technique: Live-action.

Audio: An ethereal whoosh and a dreamy string piece.

Availability: Seen on all films from the era, beginning with Kiss of Life and ending with Eastern Promises.

5th Logo (7 March 2008-22 September 2020)

Visuals: A blue light opens in the centre, leaving white particles flying everywhere. Three plates of the 1997 BBC logo zoom in, rotating in the process. The word "FILMS" zooms in.

Variants:

  • In 2015, "25 YEARS" was added below the logo.
  • On Mrs. Brown's Boys D'Movie, the logo moves from the top right to its usual position at the end of the 2013 Universal Pictures logo.

Technique: CGI animated by Liquid TV.

Audio: A mellow string tune with drumbeats.

Availability:

  • Seen on feature films that the company produced until 2020 such as Death Defying Acts.
  • The logo made its last appearance on Supernova.
  • This logo is also seen at the beginning of their films when aired on BBC channels, although it does not appear on the actual prints of some movies like Starter for 10.
  • Surprisingly, this logo is also seen after the Fox Searchlight Pictures logo and before the DNA Films logo whenever the BBC airs The History Boys and Far From The Madding Crowd, as the actual prints do not have this logo until the end credits.

BBC Film

Logo (11 February 2021-)

Variant: At the end of films, a smaller still version is used.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio: The opening theme of the movie.

Availability:

  • It first appeared on Can't Get You Out of My Head and The Mauritanian, and will appear on all upcoming productions from them.
  • However, this does not appear as an opening logo on Triangle of Sadness, and is instead in the closing credits of the film.
