Background

Venus Pictures was a Hindi/Tamil-language film production and distribution company during the late 1950s-early 1980s run by late Indian film producer T. Govindarajan.

1st Logo (July 1, 1961)

Visuals: On a black background, we see 3 shapes which consist of 2 right triangles on the bottom corners, along with a line with a rounded top, forming a rounded triangle. Inside the shape is the company's name

VENUS
PICTURES

with "VENUS" in a stylized font, and we also see a white star on the bottom. Behind all of that is what appears to be a light waving against the background.

Technique: Likely rostrum camera.

Audio: A bombastic trumpet fanfare, sounding a bit similar to the 20th Century Studios fanfare.

Availability: Seen on Nazrana.

2nd Logo (April 14, 1967-November 12, 1976)

Visuals: On a dark space background, there are four planets fading in: Venus in the center, Mercury to the lower right, Earth to the right, and a moon at the top right. While Venus is spinning and slowly zooming towards the camera, Earth flies past said planet whereas Mercury is also revolving and remaining in place. When Venus stops coming closer, "VENUS PICTURES" in white fades in underneath. The planet continues spinning for the rest of the logo.

Variant: An early extended variant exists on Pattanathil Bhootham where it starts off with the said dark space background zooming in. The planets then fade in after a few seconds and the zooming is way slower.

Technique: Practical effects.

Audio: There are three audio tracks used:

  • Starting with a warbling synth sound, a loud and dramatic orchestral sting plays before a four-note horn alternation plays.
  • Its earliest appearance uses an ethereal swarmandal glissando that lasts throughout the entire logo is heard with a nine-note sitar melody played twice, ending with a note of a vibraphone.
  • Later films use a rising orchestral piece.

Availability: Seen on Pattanathil Bhootham, Saathi, Rakhwala, Apna Desh and Oorukku Uzhaippavan.

3rd Logo (May 21, 1970)

Visuals: In a dark room, there is a light from the left illuminating a white model of 2 letters "VP" slowly spinning until it faces forward. Below the model is a big pedestal containing 2 sets of text:

VENUS PICTURES
MADRAS

all in the color red.

Technique: Live-action.

Audio: A slow woodwind fanfare.

Availability: Saen on En Annan.
