Background

Shanghai Film Group (上海電影集團) evolved from the state-owned Shanghai Film Studio (上海電影製片廠) which had a long history since the establishment of PRC. In early 2000s, after an organisational reform, Shanghai Film Group Corporation (later Co., Ltd) became the listed parent company, with Shanghai Film Studio being the main component of the group.



1st Logo (1950-1964)

Logo: On a grey cloud background, a worker-peasant-soldier (工农兵, gongnong bing) type statue rotates from the right. The company name in Chinese fades in. This logo is almost identical to both the Northeast Film Studio and Beijing Film Studio logos.

Technique: Live-action model work.

Music/Sounds: The same fanfare used in both the Northeast Film Studio and Beijing Film Studio logos.

Availability: TBA.

2nd Logo (1955-1964)

Logo: Just Chinese text over a red background.

Technique: None.

Music/Sounds: Opening theme.

Availability: Seen on The Magical Pen and Stage Sisters.

3rd Logo (1971-1980s)

Logo: On a cloud background, we see another worker-peasant-soldier statue with text underneath it.

Variants:

  • A B&W version with the white text are exists.
  • A prototype variant has a different cloud and the Chinese text is different.
  • On some films, the statue is small and Chinese text is bigger.
  • A CinemaScope variant exists, with the Chinese text shifted wider and the statue in the left.

Technique: None.

Music/Sounds: The opening theme of the film.

Availability: More common than the previous logo.

Legacy: The concept is similar to other Chinese movie logos of the time, such as Beijing Film Studio and Changchun Film Studio.

4th Logo (1981-Early 1992)


Logo: On a sea green background with colorful twinkling stars, an ornate leafed frame fades in, then a red Chinese seal consisting of the characters "上影" fades in inside the frame. Afterwards, golden Chinese text "上海電影製片廠" appears below.

Technique: Possibly Scanimate.

Music/Sounds: None or the opening theme of the movie.

Availability: Rare.

5th Logo (Early 1992-1998?)


Logo: We see the letter "S" drawing itself. A "Y" then draws itself and zooms in, then both letters turn into a ball and zoom out. The logo flashes and gold Chinese text zooms out, then a spacey blue gradient background appears behind it whilst flashing.

Technique: Traditional animation.

Music/Sounds: A trumpet fanfare.

Availability: Probably uncommon. Seen on some movies by the company.

6th Logo (1998?-2015?)

Logo: We zoom out in space, while we see the glowing Earth spinning with an orange ring surrounding it, which later resembles to be an orange filmstrip. Various orange lights then zoom out and meet in the center, forming the logo (half a circle with a filmstrip border, half a red/purple gradient wireframe globe. A person with spread arms and legs is seen in front of it, half black and half white), which glows. The orange Chinese characters "上海電影製片廠" and English translation "SHANGHAI FILM STUDIO" zoom in below the logo. The space background freezes.

Variant: Releases starting in 2002 would replace the whole text with just Chinese characters, "上海電影集團公司" on the top and "上海電影製片廠" on the bottom. Additionally, the logo freezes after the logo forms.

Technique: It's all good CGI.

Music/Sounds: A triumphant fanfare, with bells at the end. The variant had the music re-arranged with the chimes and bells more audible.

Availability: Uncommon, bordering on rare. Probably seen on some Chinese movies by the studio, like 关于爱的故事 (The Common People) and 風聲 (The Message).

7th Logo (2015?-2019?)

Logo: On a white background, we see the Shanghai Film Group logo, consist of a rendition of a sail boat in a square cut shape, with "上海电影(集团)有限公司" and "SHANGHAI FILM GROUP" beside the emblem in blue.

Technique: None.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Rare.

8th Logo (March 31, 2017-)


Logo: On a white background, we see a close-up of a blue and gold object. We then pan down and zoom out to reveal that it is the previous logo, now in the aforementioned gold and blue colors. Below it is the company name, also in gold.

Variants:

  • On Devastudios' website, it does not fade in or fade out.
  • Open-matte and darker variants exist.
  • On Baywatch, it is shortened.

Technique: Simple, yet elegant CGI from Devastudios and Michael Daniels.

Music/Sounds: None or the opening theme of the movie.

Availability: Common. First seen on Ghost in the Shell (2017), and it later appeared on Baywatch (2017), and it can be also seen on many of their foreign films.

9th Logo (2019-)

Logo: On a blue background, the same golden worker-peasant-soldier statue from the 3rd logo is seen, redone in gold, as the company name (in the same font as the 7th logo) in English and Chinese in gold fade in and appears below.

Technique: Great CGI, not unlike the previous logo.

Music/Sounds: It start with a choir and a flute note,then a triumphant theme with a drum beat accompnied the beginning and the end of the theme.

Availability: Current; unlike the previous logo, this mostly appears on domestic productions.
