Background

Science Saru, Inc. is a Japanese animation studio founded in 2013 by animators Eunyoung Choi and Masaaki Yuasa after the latter did Kick-Heart for Production I.G. After doing some subcontracted work, the studio released its first full work, the feature film The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl in 2017. After that, the studio gained global critical acclaim from a number of feature films, including Lu Over the Wall, Ride Your Wave and Inu-Oh. In 2018, the studio animated their first television series, Devilman Crybaby. In 2020, Yuasa left the studio while Choi continued to run it until Toho acquired the studio in 2024.

Logo (April 7, 2017-)


Visuals: On a white background, there is the Science Saru wordmark, consisting of the words, "SCIENCE SARU" capitalized and stacked. Atop of it, the monkey symbol comes out as it forms itself. The monkey later walks atop of the wordmark while whistling before fading to white.

Variants:

  • On The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl, the symbol and wordmark are colored in a pattern.
  • On Ride Your Wave, the logo is on an ocean wave background.
  • On Inu-Oh, the logo is animated on a black chalkboard background with the logo in white.
  • On Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the opening sequence has the logo in sepia-tone on a black and sepia-toned film reel background while the ending sequence has the logo pixelated and in blue on a black background.

Audio: Silent.

Audio Variant: On Ride Your Wave, whistling and ocean sounds can be heard.
