Background

Magyar Telekom Nyrt (officially known as Magyar Telekom Távközlési Nyilvánosan Működő Részvénytársaság) is a telecommunications service provider in Hungary. It operates as a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom. Previously known as Matáv (Magyar Távközlési Rt. – Hungarian Telecommunications PLC), the company was established in December 1989 when Magyar Posta (Hungarian Post) was divided into three separate entities. It became a public limited company, Magyar Távközlési Rt., on December 31, 1991. Privatization became possible on July 1, 1993, following the implementation of the Telecommunications Act. Until the end of 1993, the company remained entirely state-owned.
