Background

Google Maps is a web mapping platform and consumer application offered by Google. It offers satellite imagery, aerial photography, street maps, 360° interactive panoramic views of streets, real-time traffic conditions, and route planning for travelling. As of 2020, Google Maps is being used by over one billion people per month around the world.

1st Screen (2012-2014)

Visuals: Just a small square-shaped map with a red pin at the right of it and a big "g" from the 2010 Google logo at the left of it, with the wordmark (consisting of the 2013 Google logo in gray with "Maps" next to it) under it, both on a white background.

Technique: A still digital graphic.

Audio: None.

Availability: Can be seen when you start versions of the Google Maps app from 2012 until 2014 on a tablet or phone.

2nd Screen (2014-February 5, 2020)

Visuals: On a white background, there is a modified version of the map from before with alternative colors. The "g" is also smaller and is placed near the top left of the map. The 2013 Google logo in gray can be seen at the bottom of the screen.

Variant: Starting from 2015, the Google logo was changed to its current one, with the "G" in the map also being changed.

Technique: A digital graphic.

Audio: None.

Availability: It can be seen when you start versions of the Google Maps app from 2014 until 2020 on a tablet or phone.

3rd Screen (February 6, 2020-)

Visuals: On a white (if the device is on light mode) or gray (if the device is on dark mode) background, an outlined circle colored red, two slightly different shades of blue, yellow, and green in different sections forms at the center of the screen before gaining a point at its bottom and turns into a pin-like symbol.

Variant: A still variant exists on some devices.

Technique: A digital graphic, or 2D computer animation.

Audio: None.

Availability: It can be seen when you start versions of the Google Maps app from 2020 onward on a tablet or phone.
