I was quite disappointed when I saw that the 4K of Rocky IV still doesn’t have the MGM/UA Entertainment Co logo restored and instead has the 2021 MGM logo and the “United Artists Presents” tag. However since then, I’ve started to doubt that the MGM/UA logo ever appeared on its original theatrical release (though it was used on the trailer and TV spots). For instance the 1986 CBS/Fox release opens with the 1982 UA logo and subsequent home video releases open with different UA and MGM logos.

For instance, the 1990 MGM/UA VHS opens with the 1987 MGM/UA Communications Co/United Artists logo combo, the 1996 VHS opens with the 1994 UA logo, the 1997 DVD opens with the stand alone version of the 1987 UA logo, the 2001 DVD opens with (believe it or not) the 1999 MGM 75th Anniversary logo and the 2004 DVD/2009 Blu-ray both open with the 2001 MGM logo. So given this, is it possible that the original theatrical release of Rocky IV never opened with the MGM/UA logo and just had the “United Artists Presents” tag?
